Be reminded, Houston Ground Angels DO NOT provide rides between Hotels and the treatment center. Many hotels located near TMC offer shuttle services and reduced rates for patients and their families. Always ASK for the “medical rate,” and remind the desk at check in when you arrive. ALSO – check directly with the Hotel you choose – does their shuttle run when you need to be at your appointments?

Each of the organizations below may have pre-conditions and qualifications to stay – either free or at a low cost. Some provide transportation to the Medical Center. Patients and caregivers must contact them to check if it can work for you. Spaces are limited and demand is high – early research is essential.

The Open Arms Foundation is the corporate charity of MAA. They manage apartments where Patients and Caregivers can stay during extended treatment.
Joe’s House – Joe’s House is not an actual house, but a nonprofit organization that helps cancer patients and their families find a place to stay when traveling away from home for medical treatment.
The Ballard House, offers free stays and food. The Ballard House is in Katy, and Ground Angels have volunteers that can pick you up and take you to the Metro Bus that will take you straight to MD Anderson/Medical Center. Bus is $1.75 at the time of this writing. The bus runs every 15 minutes. Katy is about 45 minutes ride to the medical center.
Suggestions:
It is suggested that patients review the housing websites first to obtain more detailed information and requirements. Some have a minimum and maximum stay and some require a caregiver with the patient. Most have a waitlist so important to register as soon as need is known.
Also, when you make your reservation or check-in at a hotel, please ask for the “medical rate” discount. And please be reminded, we do not provide rides between local hotels and the medical clinics.
