Out of hundreds of volunteers
that help out with everything from special events to office
work to ground transportation, this year's unanimous pick
for Angel Flight's 2004 Volunteer of the Year is Kathy Broussard.
Although Kathy IS a pilot—pictured above with her
aircraft Sweetie Pie—she is being recognized as founder
of the Houston Ground
Angels.
The Houston Ground Angels grew out
of Kathy's concern that many patients flown into Houston
for treatment did not have anyone to meet them, and couldn't
afford the $100 round-trip taxi ride to the hospital. Valentine's
Day of 2001 marked the first Ground Angel mission. These
volunteer drivers provide round-trip transport from Angel
Flights to a patient's hospital or hotel, and agree to be
on call 24/7. Kathy serves as lead coordinator, matching
up her 260 volunteers with incoming patients. Last year,
the Houston Ground Angels helped over 1,000 people. Kathy
is particulary proud that every single request for transportation
was filled.
